Goodbye 45th Assembly District

Carol Jacques

For as long as I can remember, I have lived in the 45th Assembly District (AD)  I was born and raised in Chavez Ravine, grew up in the Mission Junction area of Silver Lake, and have also resided in Echo Park, El Sereno, Lincoln Heights, Atwater (before it was a village) and, now, in Mount Washington.

Who Is Jack Smith, Exactly?

Nina Zippay

Last month I attended a dinner party set amongst the hills of Mount Washington. In the company of several more “veteran” Mount Washingtonians I was bold enough to confess that, although I knew the name Jack Smith (how could one not living where we do?), I had never read anything by the man. I’m proud to say I live among the civilized, for I was not immediately thrown out on my ear.

Patch Blog: How a Westsider Wound Up in Mount Washington

Nina Zippay

It was almost eight years ago that I went to my first summer fun meeting hosted by the Mount Washington Association. We were living on the Westside and looking for a home to purchase. Finding nothing in our budget on the Westside but over-priced tear-downs falsely labeled as fixer-uppers – a friend suggested checking out Mount Washington. Once I realized it was a neighborhood and not a historic site near the nation’s capital I went in search of the elusive neighborhood.

Hiking the Jack Smith Trail

Natalie Seaman

Some things are just sooo Mount Washington, and the Jack and Denny Smith walk is one of those things. For the fifteenth year in a row, on the first weekend in May, we dedicated a walk though the hill to the man who put the Mount Washington neighborhood on the map of LA. Mount Washington might have “arrived” anyway, but fact that the man who called it “the poor man’s Bel Air” told stories about this magical hill in the LA Times a generation ago, did its share to help with PR.

Hike the Jack Smith Trail

Lynnette Kampe

This year the Jack Smith Trail Walk falls on May 1st as we celebrate 16 years of getting a springtime tune-up hike while fondly remembering former resident Jack Smith, the Los Angeles Times columnist who wrote with wry humor about life, the English language and his observances of Mount Washington.

Sri Daya Mata: A Remembrance

BJ Gallagher (Provided by Hank Schaffer)

"When your work speaks for itself, don't interrupt," someone wise once said. It seems an apt description of the life of Sri Daya Mata, who led the Self Realization Fellowship for the past 55 years. I never saw her pontificating on TV or quoted in news stories, as is often the case with other religious leaders. I never heard tell of any scolding or finger-wagging on the part of this spiritual woman. As far as I can tell, she lived in the spirit of Gandhi's famous words: "My life is my message."

Panel Discussion – Siqueiros Mural

It seems like everywhere one turns in LA this fall, there are events and exhibits about "Siqueiros", David Alfaro Siqueiros, one of the three great Mexican muralists. There is an exhibit at the Autry about the artist, an exhibit of his art at the Museum of Latin American Art in Long Beach and local galleries are also exhibiting his work. The City of Los Angeles has a history with this famous artist; we have a mural that he painted in the heart of the city.

America Tropical

Carol Jacques

It was 1932. The Great Depression was devastating the nation. Throughout the southwest US, immigrant workers from Mexico were among those being blamed for the economic crisis. Mexicans and Americans of Mexican descent were rounded up and deported to Mexico based on the color of their skin. No questions asked.
