The Arroyo Arts Collective
Art tours have sprouted up around the city, but the Arroyo Arts Collective’s Discovery Tour is one of the oldest — and most eclectic. Featuring a range of fine art and craft by both emerging and established artists, the Tour gives attendees the opportunity to discover and purchase amazing pieces of art and get a glimpse inside studios and homes that are just as unique as the individuals who live and work in them. From the quirky paintings by Miss Mindy to the intricate metal works by Heather McLarty; from the hand-hewn musical instruments by David Abernethy to the jewelry by Liz Smith, the Discovery Tour will delight and entice participants with its breadth of treasure.

For so many of the residents of Mount Washington, our verdant neighborhood with its bohemian spirit and stunning vistas has been an important facet of our lives. Its collective identity holds an irreplaceable value for those of us who grew up here. So it was also for Jack Rohman. Jack, who passed away in January after a battle with schizophrenia, often spoke of a special place in his heart for Mount Washington and about his future plans for living here. We were his friends, and we propose to install a mural in his memory on the concrete bulkhead supporting Mount Washington Drive between Canyon Vista and San Rafael.

I have high hopes for the youth of today.
I’ll admit that my perception might be skewed; I’m basing it on the young adults of Mount Washington, and I’m willing to acknowledge that they represent an extraordinary segment of their demographic.

The Arroyo Arts Collective’s site-specific installation project on the parkland of the Audubon Center at Debs Park ended on May 7 with a closing reception and auction, with music by Artichoke. The month-long project touched on a wide range of themes relating to our local birds, and was truly a unique blend of art and nature, and a rare glimpse into this urban wildlife sanctuary set in our own neighborhood. Each Saturday of the installation featured an event for all ages, allowing kids to make their own art about our feathered friends, or to talk with the artists.

Three Mount Washington artists are featured in the Fifteen Graces Show at the Fremont Gallery in South Pasadena. In Greek mythology, the Three Graces were the daughters of Zeus, and goddesses of charm, creativity and beauty.
The same qualities imbue the art of Julie Nagesh, Connie Rohman and Gilly Shaeffer. The Mount Washington artists are three of the Fifteen Graces, the newest show at Lida Chavez and Carlos Chavez-Andonegui’s Fremont Gallery in South Pasadena. Opening May 1st with an artists’ reception from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. and honoring the 100th Anniversary Celebration of Women’s International History as established by the U.N., the show features work by fifteen female artists who come from a wide variety of cultural backgrounds and countries.

Recently, I was trying to come up with a unique gift for my husband. I had this idea of getting a portrait painted, not anything formal, something fun. I mentioned it to a friend, and she suggested that we reach out to Margaret Garcia, a prominent local artist and see if there was a possibility that she would paint our pictures. As background, Margaret is famous for her portrait blocks – that were most recently exhibited at LACMA.
