The Mt. Washington Association was formed in 1954 by residents of the Mt. Washington community of Northeast Los Angeles. Its purpose is to preserve our community's scenic beauty, encourage and promote our cultural activities, support our educational resources and act as a forum for issues of concern to our residents and the residents of our neighboring communities.

Opening Reception: Saturday, September 13, 2008 . 7—10 pm The Mount
Washington Plein Air Painters have been painting landscapes almost every Saturday since 2000. Current members include Diane Behrens, John Byram, Jose de Juan, Ann Dudrow, Wayne Hunt, Olivia G. Rodriguez, Rod Smith, Kevin Spitze, Richard Willson, Donna Wolff, and Chris Zambon.
The artists represent a range of styles, painting in oil and watercolor.
On July 26, 2008, at 5:30 a.m., a 23 year-old woman was kidnapped from a bus stop at the corner of Colorado and Eagle Rock Blvd. The suspect forced the woman into his car and drove her to a secluded area. The suspect then sexually assaulted the victim, took her property, and drove off.
The suspect is described as a Hispanic male, short brown hair, 18-22 years of age with a mustache. He stands about 5-foot, 7-inches tall and weighs about 140-pounds.
City Council unanimously approves Reyes' motion to ban plastic bags in
City by 2010, and polystyrene in City facilities by July 1, 2009:
Councilmember Ed P. Reyes' motion to ban polystyrene food containers in
all City facilities beginning July 1, 2009 was unanimously approved by
the City Council.
The City Council, by a 13-0 vote, also approved an amendment introduced
by Reyes that bans plastic bags by July 1, 2010, if the State has
not imposed a fee of at least 25 cents by then.

The Mount Washington Association has donated $1000 to the Avenue 50
Studio to help mitigate extensive losses caused to the non-profit
gallery and community arts resource from a recent burglary.
The Association presented a check to the Avenue 50 Studio’s Kathy
Gallegos at the Summer Fun meeting at the Southwest Museum. .
The Avenue 50 Studios is a non-profit art gallery formed in 1999 to
support the cultural vitality of the community of Northeast L.A. with
Zoe Axelrod is an 18- year old North Hollywood High School graduate. She has been painting on bubble wrap for over 5 years, and had a showing of bubble wrap pieces at Buster’s coffee shop in South Pasadena from 2003-2005. Zoe recently graduated from the USC Ryman School of Fine Arts for high school students. She was also the artist of the cover and inside art for the CD Songs of Shiloh. Zoe’s most recent showings were in Cactus Gallery’s “FOUND”, “Día de los Muertos” and “Icons” shows. After graduating, Zoe will attend the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore, where she will major in Environmental Design and minor in Culture and Politics.
Mt. Washington School expects openings for 4th, 5th, and 6th graders into the School for Advanced Studies for the 2008-2009 school year. This program is designed to support and expand articulated Gifted/Talented programs in LAUSD. The Advanced Studies Program at Mt. Washington is a high-level academic program and serves to meet the educational needs of highly able learners within our local school community.
Self-Realization Fellowship has announced that they have selected Pfeiffer Partners architects to begin planning for an earthquake and life-safety retrofit of their historic International Headquarters Building on San Rafael Avenue. Originally constructed in 1908 as the Mt. Washington Hotel, the SRF Headquarters Building was officially designated a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument in 2007.
